Dissertation Title:

Design and Analysis of Vehicle Sharing Programs: A Systems Approach

The objective of this research is to examine the role of vehicle sharing programs in reducing automobile dependence. Vehicle sharing programs are seen as socially responsible, sustainable and economical mode of transport. These programs involve a fleet of vehicles positioned strategically at stations across the transportation network. Users are free to lease vehicles to complete a trip and drop the vehicle at a station close to their destination.

The shared vehicle fleet can comprise of cars, electric vehicles or bicycles. From the perspective of a public transportation agency, such systems can vastly improve the efficiency of a transit system. They do so by offering a competitive 'last mile' connection, the lack of which dissuades potential transit riders.

By providing a vital leg of an intermodal route, the effective catchment area of a transit line increases. The envisioned outcomes of the research will provide valuable input to policymakers, service providers, and present vital empirical evidence supporting the use of an unconventional solution to the larger mobility problem.
