“Mathematical Modeling of Command-and-Control Strategies in Crowd Movement”

Pub60This paper describes mathematical models and solution frameworks for assessing command and control strategies in the centralized coordination of crowd movement. Effectiveness of strategies ranging from providing information only to reconfiguring the built environment through architectural design changes and forcing pedestrians to follow system optimally designed evacuation routes are investigated and compared using proposed mathematical formulations and computational methodologies. These mathematical formulations and solution methods were tested on an illustrative example network. Differences in system performance under these strategies were assessed and performance in terms of total travel time was compared. Efficiency gains obtained through command and control in crowd movement are investigated.
